Prof. Dr.-Ing. Uwe Arens appointed to the National Committee for Safety and Health at Work
The world of work is changing, and with it the requirements for the safety and health protection of workers. It is therefore all the more important that the Occupational Safety and Health Act is adapted to these new challenges. Professor Dr.-Ing. Uwe Arens from Bremerhaven has now been appointed to the National Committee for Safety and Health at Work (ASGA). There, he is part of a small group of academics who will advise the Federal Minister for Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) in future.

Two students from Bremerhaven are nominated for an international UX Design Award for their app to tackle food waste
On average, people in Germany throw away 78 kilograms of food every year. Per person! Far too much, thought Jette Kirmse and Merle von Forstner. They are studying Digital Media Production at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences and have developed the “zero left” app. It helps people waste less food by providing a digital fridge and smart management of use-by dates and leftover recipes. The students have now been nominated for the prestigious UX Design Award for their app. It is one of the most important international awards in the field of user experience design and recognises outstanding user-centred digital products, services and concepts.

Spanish students are working alongside their fellow students from Bremerhaven on experiments aimed at evidence-based business management
Students and lecturers from Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences have invited their Spanish fellow students from the Ourense campus of their partner university in Vigo to the "Seestadt" for a joint seminar. Under the title "Experiments and Evidence-Based Management", they explored how companies can use systematic testing to make more informed decisions in marketing, human resources and product development. They combined lectures, practical exercises and case studies from the business world – whilst also improving their language skills and intercultural competence. There was also time for joint activities and sightseeing.

Early-warning system for mini-implosions in industrial plants
In industrial plants where liquids flow at very high speeds, tiny vapour bubbles can form and collapse again in a fraction of a second. This phenomenon, known as cavitation, causes long-term material erosion on flow-exposed components such as valves or pipe bends, leading to a loss of efficiency and, in some cases, damage. As part of her bachelor’s thesis, Anna Titze sought a way to automatically distinguish the negative aspects of cavitation from those necessary for the mixing process before they even arise. To this end, she analysed several million measurement values.

Fresh Poster Ideas on Large Advertising Spaces
Even in the age of online campaigns, posters on large advertising spaces remain a great way to draw attention to a product, a company, or an event, for example. For this to work, it takes creative ideas and effective visual language. Once again this year, business administration students at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences developed campaigns for real clients. In pitches, the student “agencies” competed against one another to convince the Zoo am Meer Bremerhaven and the Kemner Home Company of their ideas. The winning designs will be on display in August on advertising spaces owned by the Ströer media company in Bremerhaven.

Ready for an independent IT infrastructure
Every first Sunday of the month, various organisations call for a ‘Digital Independence Day’. The aim is to raise awareness of digital sovereignty and encourage people to switch to platforms that are independent of large corporations. This is also an important issue at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. The computer science degree programmes train specialists who will drive forward the digital sovereignty of businesses and public authorities in the future. To raise awareness of this, the university cooperates with organisations such as the Open Source Business Alliance (OSBA). Recently, a group of students took part in the SCS Summit in Berlin.

German-Polish student group develops AI-based system for ship monitoring
An international group of students from Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences and its Polish partner university in Gdynia has developed an innovative system for analysing data on ship movements. Using GPS and AIS data, combined with artificial intelligence, the system identifies and visualises ships’ manoeuvres, locations and activities. The solution will soon be available for use in calculating ship emissions and is aimed at port authorities, insurance companies and maritime service providers. It was presented at an international AI conference.

Practical marine measurements at sea
How do marine measuring instruments work, and what do the measurement results tell us about the state of the oceans? Students specialising in Marine Technology and Wind Energy (MUW) on the Bachelor’s degree programme in Engineering are exploring questions such as these. Theresa Mevenkamp, Johannes Lutz and Alisa Küther recently put what they had learnt in lectures to the test during a five-day research voyage to Heligoland. On board the research vessel ‘Heincke’, they collected and analysed samples that revealed the impact of the tides on the ecosystem. The excursion was made possible by the long-standing collaboration with the Alfred Wegener Institute.
