Cross-media design skills

Whether in film production, campaign development or web design, technological know-how and state-of-the-art media design skills give agencies and companies a crucial competitive edge. A world without (digital) media is unthinkable today – communication takes place everywhere and at all times by means of the most diverse media. The 'Digital Media Production' study programme therefore focuses on an interdisciplinary profile with an educational emphasis on dovetailing the disciplines of media design, media informatics and media management.

Activities and occupations

Graduates of the Digital Media Production programme have strong skills in interface design and extensive knowledge of the aspects of cross-media design. Web design specialists, multimedia professionals and communication designers are among the professionals currently sought after by companies across all sectors. If you decide to specialise in 'Audiovisual Media', there is a variety of options in the field of film, television and Internet TV, ranging from video production to on-air design in the field of motion design and in 3D design. A special area in the production and design landscape is application design, i.e. the design and programming of digital applications that focus especially on usability and user experience. Our graduates have very good qualifications in this area due to their familiarity both with programming and with UX design, prototype development, interface design and animation/visualisation. The study programme also offers an ideal framework for the path to self-employment, which many students already pursue during their studies.

Hands-on education

The bachelor's degree programme Digital Media Production has an interdisciplinary profile with an educational emphasis on the dovetailing of disciplines, i.e. the conception, design and development of multimedia systems. In the field of media design, modules such as 'Typeface and Layout', 'Audiovisual Media' and 'Photographic Basics' are offered in the first year of study. In the area of media informatics, the courses 'Media Engineering', 'Multimedia Technology' and 'Programming' provide basic insights into media technology and programming languages. 'Business Administration' and 'Marketing' introduce you to the field of media management. In the following semesters, you can take elective modules from the specialisations 'Audiovisual Media' and 'Cross-media Publishing', including the core media project in the third and fourth semesters. The students work in a laboratory setting following a project-based approach. This work is accompanied by lectures and seminars teaching them, for example, the theoretical foundations of media production and reception.

Bremerhaven students successful in poster competition organised by the German Student Services Organisation

A great success for three students of Digital Media Production at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences: With their poster ideas on the theme of ‘Campus of the Future’, Milla Kirmse, Merle von Forstner and Michelle O'Shea have secured a place in the travelling exhibition of the 39th poster competition organised by the German Student Union. This makes them one of thirty selected students whose posters will be on public display in the coming weeks. A total of 388 students from all over Germany submitted up to three poster ideas each. Merle von Forstner had a special reason to celebrate: her poster entitled ‘Vision’ was awarded third place.

When artificial intelligence directs on his own

Whether on posters, in commercials or in images and videos on social media, artificial intelligence can now be found in many areas of everyday life. Accordingly, there are also loud critical voices warning of the loss of many jobs. But what can AI really do when people want to invest as little time and money as possible in production? Prof. Dr Holger Rada, head of the Digital Media Production (DMP) programme at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, has been looking into this question. He had several AI tools produce a music video together without intervening creatively himself. The result shows what AI is already capable of today – and where its limits lie.

Student documentary film successful at international film festivals

Studies show that teenagers and young adults are feeling increasingly lonely. But why is that? A student film team from the Digital Media Production (DMP) program at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences addressed this question as part of the “Documentary Film” media project, winning over the juries at international film festivals. “Mehr als allein” has not only won four awards for best film, but has also been screened at ten international film festivals. This makes it the most successful film by Bremerhaven students to date in the festival season.
